I am trying to piece together information about a Laing family who emigrated to Canada around 1908. They seem to have settled at first in Saskatchewan as I have them there in 1911 and 1916.
Henry joined the 243rd Overseas Battalion, C.E.F in 1916. At that time he was living in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. I then found the death of Henry Maclauren Laing, 10 June 1962, aged 63, Vancouver. He was the son of Jane Laing m.s.White, [she was a widow when she emigrated] and James Laing. Henry was born in Coldingham, Berwickshire. His siblings I know about were George, James and Bella - all born in Berwickshire, Scotland.
His father was my great grandfather's brother.
Does anyone have any information about Henry and his descendants?
I have photos taken when they left on their journey.

Re: Henry Maclauren

Do you have any of Henry's children names or his wife? If not then an obit might help. If you like I can search in the newspaper archives here in the Vancouver library. I work close by and can drop by at lunch hour.

John,
Thank you very much for the reply and offer of help. I'm afraid that I have no idea of his wife's name. It was only by chance that I tried his name in the b.c. vital check and I thought that there couldn't be many Henry McLaurin/Maclauren Laings about. All I have is a birthdate from his C.E.F. joining up papers - 29th August 1897, so although death record says he was 63 I take that as being near enough. The date of death was given as 10th June 1962. Reg. Number: 1962-09-007430.
B.C. archives Microfilm No: B13257
GSU Microfilm Number: 2033499
If you can find anything more out I would be very grateful but please don't spend too long and please don't go hungry!
Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Rachel,

You have given me the reference numbers for his death record which I can get at the library at the same time. I will visit there sometime this week and will be back to you.

Thanks, John, I look forward to your reply. Hope you are lucky.
Perhaps I can help you out if you happen to have any Scottish ancestors?

Hi Rachel

Today I found the registration of death record for Henry MacLaurin Lamont Laing. I am certain we have the right person since his parents have the correct names and both were born in Scotland.
I will contact you off line about the best way to get the record to you. I will go to library again and see if there is an obit. That might give you the names of any children.

Hi there Rachel,
Not sure if Its any help but I am compiling a booklet about the men from the parish of Cockburnspath who fought in The First World War and there were 2 Laings a George and James Laing, unfortunately James was killed and George who ran his fathers tailors ? shop was eventually called up after trying to get exemption as he was the only one left to run the business. However I dont have any photos of him in uniform which I am desperate to find and get copies of the men who served.
If you wish a copyof his inscription on the local war memorial i will only be too pleased to help
regards
Douglas
P.S there are Laings from this side in Dunbar East Lothian, unfortunatly Norman recently died, he would have had a wealth of stuff
