I wrote to York Probate Registry to ask them to search for a will.

Today a large envelope arrived....several pages in it at least.....yippee!!!!

The letter from them says:
".......only the name, address and date of death can be used in determining whether a record is held."

OK, so I had the name, exact date of death, place of death, and likely residence (same area as place of death since that was where he was found in the census one month earlier)

My info as written on the application: Samuel Wade alias Ward (as written on death certificate) died 23 May 1871, Sweet Street, Holbeck, Yorkshire lived in Holbeck, Yorkshire, was a retired policeman

Their letter goes on to say:
"Occasionally, documents are provided that do not match exactly the details supplied"

No kidding! The will they sent was for Samuel Wade, Gentleman, of Littleover in the County of Derby, died 6 August 1873 at Littleover!!

I did understand that they would not send my money back had they not found a will or admons for "my" Samuel, but why send me a will for someone else, who was very obviously was not "mine"?

The answer is easy, you provided them with too much information.
