I am looking for any information about my grandfather, HARRY LENHART. The only record I have of him is his marriage certificate and his name on my father's birth certificate. He was married on 15.10.1906 when his age was given as 25 and his occupation "Gunner in Royal Artillery". Soon after this marriage he was posted to Hong Kong with his regiment, apparently never to be seen or heard of again. I don't know when or where he was born, although there was a family story that he had some connection with Canada. He was also said to have family who kept a shop in London. There does not appear to be any record of his birth in the GRO lists. On his marriage certificate his father was recorded as "HARRY LENHART, deceased" a "boilermaker (journeyman)".

I have found a family of LENHARTS living in London (Middlesex) in the latter half of the 19th century. They lived in Enfield where the head of the household was a toolmaker at RSAF until c1895. Then they had a tobacconist's shop in Tottenham up until 1914. After that date I lose track of them. Since they were of German extraction, they may well have changed their name at that time. However, in spite of gathering lots of detail about this family and much searching, I cannot link my grandfather to them. This, in spite of the fact that HENRY was a recurring family name and that one of the family was blind. This is significant because there is a congenital sight problem in my immediate family, which came from my father.

I am really stuck here...I don't know where else to look or what other avenues to explore. Army Records don't appear to be of any help but I find them a bit impenetrable. Any help or suggestions would be most welcome please.

Have you managed to identify him on 1901 census? This will give you some pointers.

I have similar probleims with some of my lines in that they probably changed their names during WW1. I know that there is not a complete record anywhere covering these and at present cannot suggest any thing other than seeingwhether there is anything at the National Archives - there is a chance that they have something if he became a naturalized British citizen.

Good luck in your searches.
