I found the Stuckeys whilst searching for one of my lot in 1861 census. I was really intrigued by this 100%employed family, more particularly by Elizabeth who gave her occupation as Pew Opener.
My mind boggles!
Can anyone enlighten me?

Perhaps it was her job to open the door of the pew for the posh people because they used to have family pews with quite high wooden walls to keep them from the prying eyes of the common folk. I believe they had seats inside too whereas the common herd would have to stand.

Somewhere in Derbyshire I found a church where the pew in front of the pulpit had a small fireplace as well as the wooden walls with a door - wish I could remember where. Anybody ???

Also at one time Pew Rents were collected, details can sometimes be found amongst Parish Chest material, perhaps showing who were the 'posh' folk

'tis just as it sounds, someone in the church who opened the pew doors; also sometimes referred to as a pewman.
