I have an ancestor who is recorded as deceased on his daughter marriage certificate in August 1850 but his death is registered in the December quarter 1850. Did they keep him in a cupboard for 4 months?

Seeing that it is the December quarter which I always thought was October/November and December they could have been late registering the death. You need to check the death certificate to confirm the details.

I had the same thing happen to me. My gt.grandfather said his father was deceased at the time of his marriage, but in fact I have my gt.gt. g/fathers death certificate showing he died several years later.

I think that it was a case that he didn't approve of the marriage, plus my gt. grandfather was underage....said he was 19, when it was 4 days before his 17th birthday.

So...don't believe everything you see on a certificate. Someone very kindly looked up the original entry of the marriage cert. for me to see if it had been an error, but it was clearly defined as `deceased'.

Look to see if the marriage took place in the same place where he lived. Mine got married in an area where his wife lived.

Hope that helps.

Six weeks was allowed to register an event. So someone who was born or died in the second half of July could appear in the December Quarter index.

Looking at my boyfriend, who is slumped in front of the telly pretending to watch the Olympics with his eyes shut, I would say that the answer to your question is .......................... oh yes!
