In 1881, William AIKIN (aged 7) is shown on the census as a visitor in the house of John SNELL and his wife Frances in CRONDALL, Hampshire. John was born in Hennock, Devon (c1845) and Frances in Basingstoke, Hampshire (c 1850). AIKIN has been transcribed Aitkin, but the original looks like it has been amended to AIKIN. Place of birth given as Newcastle, Durham.

In 1891, William is now William A SNELL, and he and Frances have moved to Basingstoke, Hants. John was in the Portsmouth (Hants) workhouse. William's place of birth given as Seaham Harbour, Durham.

In 1901, William is married and in Chatham, Kent. When he married in 1898 (Jun Strood), he was William AIKIN SNELL. Frances is also in Chatham, but living on her own. She is described as a widow, but John had gone back to live with his mother in Devon. William gave his place of birth as Seaham, Durham.

I have been unable to find John and Frances wedding. I cannot find John on the 1871, so am unsure of the rough date. I have looked at various possibilities to fit Frances' maiden name but none work out.

I originally thought that Frances may have been an AIKIN, and that John 'adopted' William as his own son when she married him.

However, although I have been unable to find a GRO reference for William's birth, I have found a baptism record for him in Easington parish, Durham. He was baptised William Aikin SNELL, parents William and Fanny.

Fanny could be Frances, but I cannot find a marriage to a William SNELL.

William SNELL Snr may be John's brother b c 1852 as he disappears after 1861.

Does anyone have William Aikin Snell or Frances in their tree? I know I can order his marriage cert but thought I would ask your folks out there first!
