I'm trying to trace the death of one of my lot, between 1881 and 1891, but I don't know which surname to look for, so I'm asking for advice from the experts! :) Here's a little background info.

George NAYLOR m. Grace HINCHCLIFFE on 16 Oct 1853 Thornhill, one week after her son was baptised at the same Church.

Charles bap. 09 Oct 1853 Thornhill - son of Grace HINCHCLIFFE (Spinster of Overton). Overton comes under the Reg. District of Wakefield and the only birth ref which 'fits' the time and area is this one:
Charles HINCHLIFF GRO Ref: 1853 Sep Qtr. Wakefield 9c 4

There are no Charles NAYLOR's registered in Wakefield for this quarter or the next one, so I'm confident about ordering this certificate. :)

However, could someone please tell me which surname I should look for to try and find his death? In my next message, are details of the Censuses ........ the Head of Household in two of them is Edward HINCHCLIFFE, who is the brother of Grace (she died in 1869 and her four children were split up between two families). I've typed them out 'as is' but Harriott's correct surname is NAYLOR, so I have made notes on them as you will see, also I have removed the names of Edward's children.

It depends entirely on the name he was using at the time of death and so the name in which the informant registered the death - which I appreciate doesn't help you a great deal.

Looking at the census detail, he only seems to appear as NAYLOR in 1861, whilst a child and with his mum. Thereafter he is shown as HINCHCLIFFE. From this, I'd be inclined to try HINCHCLIFF(E) first and then NAYLOR afterwards, with its several variant spellings.

Sorry if that seems rather like hedging bets

Thanks Geoffers :)
It's going to be very difficult to find the correct death over a ten year period isn't it? http://uk.geocities.com/diane.gerry@btinternet.com/Crying.gif
The surname HINCHCLIFFE has so many variations in spelling, NAYLOR is quite consistent with my lot, but Charles is very common.

I realised I was going to have trouble when his birth wasn't registered as Charles Hinchcliffe NAYLOR/NAYLOR even though George was his Father. Possibly, this was Edward's revenge on behalf of his sister ..... dropping the name?

Funny thing is, in 1881, Alice and the said Harriot NAYLOR are both living with Harriot ALLOTT nee HINCHCLIFFE, daughter of Edward! :D
