I'm trying to trace the descendants of my greatuncle Albert and his wife Elsie. They lived for a while in India (Indian Civil Service or Army?) where at least the first 2 children, Albert and Daphne were born. He died in Hobart, Tasmania in 1985. At least one of his children, Brian, ended up out there too. I have a barely readable hand-drawn tree with about 20 names, mainly just first or known ones, but the person who drew it is now dead. Any help appreciated as I achieved nothing apart from amalgamating it with some records from FamilySearch.
Any more general ideas on researching British people serving in the Indian Civil Service and Army before independence welcome too. Apart from Albert, my own father served there during the Second World War and I would like to find out more about life in the Indian Army in the first half of the 20th century.

Try the India Office Records

which should be quite handily placed for you

Maurice,

A bit of information on your search - both Albert and Elsie died in Hobart, and I will have a look at the Archives of Tas tonight for more details.

Albert Andrew Farlie, 66, lived at Moonah, cremated 15th December 1965, buried at Kingston Lawn cemetery, section D, row L, no. 25
Elsie Farlie, 88, lived at Berridale, died 5th December 1985, buried 10th December 1985 in same plot as her husband.

These places are all suburbs of Hobart.

Barrie.

Geoffers,

Thanks for the useful reference. It is indeed quite close though getting there would be constrained by health difficulties. On a good day however...........
Regards,
Maurice

Barrie,
This is excellent - it sure does help, and more than I could have hoped for. It makes sense of a rough, hand-drawn tree that my deceased uncle put together. I have also found Dorothy Pash's records on FamilySearch.
I had an address for Brian and Val Farlie but didn't get a reply to a letter I sent them a few years ago - presumably an out-of-date address. With your help I should now be able to flesh out this branch of the family.
Kind regards,
Maurice
