View Full Version : Who Do You Think You Are?

Yes, I know, it's not a serious genealogy programme but it is interesting and it does show the 'meat on the bones' of the subject and at worse, can be seen as entertainment but I am incandescent with rage as I write!
(Apologies to non-UK forum members)
Tonight there was a Welsh football match on both digital and analogue channels for BBC2 Wales, which had not finished by 9.00 pm. This means that anyone who wanted to watch 'Who Do You Think You Are?' at 9.00pm is out of luck, even if they had timed their VCRs to record it. Don't tell me that it is being put out at 11.20 pm on digital BBC2 - have you ever tried to record off a digital channel?
And I see that the same thing is likely to happen next week, this time it will be broadcast at 12.05 am! Some of us are not able to have Sky, so we do not even have the option of seeing what the national channels are broadcasting, so don't even mention that route.
Please don't assume that I am anti-football, I have been known to watch and enjoy the occasional footie match, and even rugby when Wales beat England, but what has incensed me is the total lack of choice!
And this in the week that it has been said that 'Who Do You Think You Are?' has been regularly attracting more than 5 million viewers, more than Celebrity Big Brother!
I suggest that regional TV progammers start to take notice of viewing figures, what real people are interested in and the element of choice for viewers.
It is enough to make me seriously think of emigrating to London! |rant| |rant| |rant|

I'm with you Patrisia,
Why did they need to show the football on both BBC2 channels in Wales, I think it's quite inexcusable! Do they think that only a small percentage of the 5,000,000 live in Wales and are, therefore, not important? We always seem to come at the end of the list don't we? and we can't balme it all on Ron Davies and the Welsh Assembly - we'll give some of the blame to Rhodri shall we?

I knew I should have double-checked before putting fingers to keyboard. I've just looked at tonight's recording and it was BBC1 for an hour so I've got the wrong programme. Sorry for raising hopes. I really must learn to double check these things before setting it to record mode!!!!! It's not being repeated in the Southwest region as far as I am aware.
I do have the first three programmes already onto disc and plan to do the rest of the series if I can get my channels right for the next few weeks if that will help anyone.

like I said Dennis......
even if they had timed their VCRs to record it. Don't tell me that it is being put out at 11.20 pm on digital BBC2 - have you ever tried to record off a digital channel? ..but thank you for the kind thought.
I have propped up my eyelids and managed to take it in....... but that is not the point.....(still fuming!)
Ann, I think we need to start a 'down with BBC Wales' campaign, they are getting worse than S4C, starting with Rhodri Morgan, I think he is far too cosy with Sara!

I'm sorry that you both missed the programme owing to sport coverage. I'm lucky not to have your problem with our BBC2, plus I have a very understanding husband, who lets me *throw him out* into the bedroom to watch all sport on the TV in there! ;)
However, I found that Julian Clary's Mother got on my nerves! I won't spoil it for you by giving details - but I was pleased when she got her *come-uppance*! :D

Me too, Diane.....after all she had said
Best wishes

Very true....as the title suggests `Who Do You THINK You Are? Did she really know, and kept quiet?
Really enjoying this series though, it's thrown up some interesting facts of life.
Sorry you've had problems Patrisia....and yes...trying to video from digital is hopeless!

|wave| Girls,
Now about next week :) We don't have Sky, but we have a digibox and as you say, it's not as easy to record things, as I haven't managed to work out whether or not it's possible to set the timer! ;)
I wanted to tape something on ITV 3 a while back, which started at 12.30a.m. and that's way past my bedtime. At 11.00p.m. I put ITV 3 on the TV, then tuned the video recorder to the AU Channel ...... then pressed the record button on the video remote.
You could do this and then just fast forward your tape for one and a half hours to the start of the programme to watch it, as I did! :D
You ought to be able to timer record the AV channel just like a tuner channel.
The only downside is that unless you have a digital decoder box that can change channels itself at times you've told it, you're stuck with one channel able to be recorded from the digital box.
Some FreeView boxes now are time/channel agile, but you still end up having to effectively set up both the FreeView box and the VHS to achieve a set of timed recordings.
Best to try to test it first, eg grabbing the 5pm news on News24 or something before relying on the system for a really wanted programme.

That's the one we have, so I'll just carry on tuning into ITV 3 or whatever, on the TV first. After selecting AU on the video recorder and pressing the record button ........ it's just a case of hoping that my desired programme will fit somewhere in a four hour tape. Mind you, I've just remembered the LP button which I don't normally use, so clicking that, the tape will run for eight hours, so I can use that as a last resort! ;)

Or you could always buy yourself a VHS recorder with the freeview tuner built in. Yes, they do exist. You simply go to the Electronic Program Guide, choose the program and tell it to record it. Make sure there is a tape with enough space in the slot and Bob's your Uncle! Some of them even have their own PDC which means it will keep the right recording times even if the programme starts and finishes early or late.
No, I am not talking about a DVD recorder - this is a VHS recorder with freeview built in. We've got one and the quality of recorded programme is far superior to recording analogue tv.
Hopefully, I will capture the next two weeks of this programme on my hard drive and have them available on DVD if anyone wishes a copy. I managed the first three weeks no problem but wasn't concentrating last night when I set up the PC to record and put BBC1 in instead of BBC2. Let's call it a 'senior moment'.

Thanks everone, for all the support for my rant!

You ought to be able to timer record the AV channel just like a tuner channel.Er, no good, I have a digital TV and please don't tell me it can still be done, I am a complete idiot about things like that, unless I can just press buttons marked A, B or C, if you see what I mean.:o
Or you could always buy yourself a VHS recorder with the freeview tuner built in. That sounds good Dennis - particularly as 'he who shall not be named' decided to re-tune the VCR and now I can't seem to record anything at all!
Anyway, I am looking forward to Jane Horrocks next week, even if I do have to stay awake past midnight.
BTW, needless to say, nothing yet from BBC Wales!

Strange given the amount of compression used to squash the tv channels onto each multiplex channel. You don't have to look very hard to see the jpeg artifacts (both on FreeView and Satellite).
The one saving grace is that if it's manufactured as one unit, then maybe the VHS isn't having to separate out the colour from the luminance information as it does for PAL. But the bandwidth that VHS gives the chrominance signal, that's unlikely to make a big difference.

Using a 28inch widescreen tv (or two) we always consider that the freeview picture is superior to the analogue and this includes the VHS tapes made on the VCR. I always thought that the eye is fooled into not noticing compression artefacts by the frame rate.
I have captured both analogue and digital tv to the PC. On a single still frame they both look pretty awful but the analogue is always noisier.
Mind you it might look different on one of the massive Plasma screens!!!

Thanks for that Dennis ..... when my video recorder pops its clogs, I shall certainly get one of these. :)
Just watch, now I've said that ..... it will probably outlive me! :D
watch carefully next time there's a press conference or similar with lots of camera flashes going off ... see how the picture deteriorates into a lot of blocks.
Or watch something like the overnight channel 5 sport, where they have subtle shading of lighting (purple or blue) on the studio flats. Again you'll see blocky artifacts on digital, whereas analogue will be smooth.
Anyone else still reading this ... and using FreeView ... notice the difference (if you can) between a RGB (or CVBS) feed into the telly compared to a composite signal from the decoder box, especially on name captions.
