Does anyone know where I can access copies of Navy List for mid-nineteenth century ? 2 members of my husband's CAVE family served in RN and would love to know more about their careers.Margaret

Does anyone know where I can access copies of Navy List for mid-nineteenth century ?The National Archives (TNA)
The Society of Genealogists
Royal Naval Museum at Portsmouth
Larger Reference Libraries, County Record Offices and Local Stduies' Libraries ofen have a partial run.
Some Navy Lists can be purchased on CD-rom.
TNA would probably be best. Were they definitely officers? Have you tried searching http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ for Seamens' Services from 1873
and http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp
(enter the surname in the first field and ADM29 in the department of series code) which covers the erpido up to the mid-19th century. If you find an entry of use, you can order it from TNA.

Thanks geoffers. very helpful. yes they were definitely officers- on 1901 census one is an admiral! I did look on national archives but possibly not the right place. Will try the links you suggest. many thanks. margaret
