Does anyone have acccess to Parish Records for Plymouth possibly Stoke Damerel please.
According to the 1871 Census Lavinia Dyson was born on Plymouth,Devon in 1863. Sister Rebecca b. 1859 Plymouth, Devon. Both girls were living as adopted daughters with seperate families in Yorkshire.
On Lavinias marriage cert. in 1883 her father is recorded as Benjamin Dyson Occ. Soldier.
On the 1851 Census is a Benjamin Dyson Soldier with wife Jane and Dau. Elizabeth aged 1. They don't show up on any other census.
Thankyou

FreeBMD has a marriage for Benjamin Dyson in Mar qtr 1849, Stoke Damerel, Devonshire (vol 9 pg 475). There are 3 Janes on the same page: Jane Bates, Jane Mitchell, and Jane Roach. The time would coincide with the birth of Elizabeth the following year - you might want to send for the certificate to see which of the 3 he was married to, and if this Benjamin is your soldier. If so, it should give their fathers' names.

It's possible that in 1871 Benjamin was still alive. If he was a soldier and his wife died, he would have had to send his daughters away to be raised by others. I mention this because in the 1871 census, both daughters are in Saddleworth and in Sep qtr 1899 there is a death for Benjamin Dyson, age 63, in Saddleworth (vol 9a pg 173). The age would be correct for this to have been their father, so it might be worth checking out.
Debbie
Edit - 1881 census shows Benjamin b: abt 1836, wife Hannah, children Annie (19), John (18) , Helena (15), Robert (13) in Saddleworth. None b: Plymouth, so who knows? Might or might not be him... (POB might not be correct, children may have come with her to the marriage, if her 2nd, and taken name Dyson, etc.)

There is a Jane Dyson who died in Plymouth, Devonshire Mar qtr 1865 (vol 5b pg 211). No age given, so may want to check this out, also. It may have been the girls' mother.

Thankyou very much Debbie Ann,
I have the marriage cert. for Benjamin Dyson 1849 and Jane Roach, but because according to the information on it Benjamin and Jane were both born ca. 1822/3 which would make them in their 40's when they had Lavinia. Also as Dyson appears to be a Yorkshire surname and there were several Benjamins in the Saddleworth and Halifax area at that time I am going round in circles, but the news about the death of a Jane Dyson in 1865 certainly is VERY interesting , as is the death of Benjamin I will certainly look into it. This is the nearest I have come after 12 months of searching.

There's a Lavinia Ann Dyson, b: Oldham, Yorkshire (includes Saddleworth registers) in Sep qtr 1862 (vol 8d pg 583). Interesting...
Debbie
Edit - in Mar qtr 1883 Lavinia was married to either James Bottomley or Richard Hammomd in Saddleworth (vol 9a pg 345). Perhaps the marriage certificate would state if her father were alive or deceased...

Lavinia married my gr. grandfather Richard Hammond in 1883 and on cert. Benjamin Dyson is shown to be a Soldier so I don't think that the Benjamin with Hannah can be same person.
Also marriage Cert. gives name only as Lavinia.
The 1871 Census shows Lavinia Dyson b. Plymouth, Devon living in Saddleworth.
Living in the same village in 1871 is, (also as an adopted daughter) Rebecca Dyson b. 1859 Plymouth, Devon.
Living in Babbacombe, Devon is a Mary J. Dyson b. 1855 working as a servant.
Again there are other Lavinia or Lavina's living in the area VERY FRUSTRATING but am very grateful for your help.
Surely if Janes death is registered in Plymouth then the girls should also be registered there, but cannot find any trace on BMD sites, and until I have proof of parents cannot send for any certs.
