Having tried without success to use a refilled cartridge I have finally bought a new one (lexmark). Since buying this printer I have changed my pc to a Dell.
All indications are that the software is loaded ok but the printer goes through the motions but does not print. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong ?.
Help greatly appreciated.

Hi Roy

You'll need to be a little more specific ...

Is the printer connected USB, serial, parallel or ethernet?

Have you loaded the printer drivers onto the new (Dell) PC? eg by going to Lexmark's website and downloading the correct drivers for the printer for the version of Windows you're using.

Have you configured Windows on the new PC to use the printer, eg using the "Add New Printer" wizard? Did it then print the test page OK?

"Going through the motions" ... does that mean the printer's own self-test when powered, or when you send a print job to it?

Has it ever worked with the (new) Dell computer regardless of cartridge?

Hi Mark,
Connected via USB as with previous PC.
Drivers loaded from Lexmark site.
Added new printer via wizard
On mainenance page added new cartridge
Still only a blank page when trying to print test page.

Long shot - if you've switched off in between attempts, skip this.

If it's anything like my friend's lousy "Dell" printer, which is only a rebadged Lexmark, if you've cancelled anything (e.g. because of paper jam or whatever), *you* might think it's cancelled but the printer doesn't, subsequent items are sent to the back of the queue that you didn't know you had, and it won't print a thing until you turn the power off and start again.

If you have disconnecgted it from the computer for any reason then it might just be the same as the lexmark thing that I have and when you connect it up again the computer sees it as a completely differnet item BUT doesn't know what to do with it!

OH and don't try to use refill cartridges with lexmark printers they just are more trouble than they are worth - I would set fire to my printer if I didn't need one so much

Thanks to everyone who have answered my original question.
I have been through the process of uninstalling and then reinstalling from the Lexmark cd. Also getting the driver update from their site and nothing seems to alter.
It is a brand new cartridge and is definately the correct unit. Paper removed. Seated properly. The printer goes through all the motions but still a blank page.
Thanks again, Roy

Hi Roy, have you tried using the head cleaning / ink priming facility on the printer. I know with my old Epson that I would get blank pages sometimes after I changed cartridges and head cleaning a couple of times would do the job.
Worth a try.

Try a different cartridge, it could well be that the ink isn't flowing :)

Unless you are madly in love with your Lexmark - TIITS (throw it in the skip). In my experience, Lexmark are more trouble than they're worth.
Buy an Epson and some compatible cartridges (which are dirt cheap). Saving on cartridges will soon recoup the cost of a medium priced printer.
