I am searching for information on a HORNE family that was living in St. Andrew, Edinburgh in 1841. The census lists 8 people in the family: David (45), Isabella (40), James (14), Isabella (8), Agnes (5), Robert (3), Henry (7m), and James (80). The IGI only lists daughters Isabella and Agnes, and I had no luck with the Scotland's People website for births or marriages.

Could SKS please have a look at the 1851 and 1861 censuses for me? I know the parents died before 1868 (son James's death registration lists them as deceased), but I would like to find as much information about this family as possible.

Thanks,

Sarah

I am currently researching the Horne family, but I am not quite as far back as you have got. I can verify that the there is a pattern of names that compares. I have a James Horne, who married in 1855 - 16th August to Constance Mary Shewell in Cheltenham, the Hornes came from Caithness - Stirkoke in Wick.

I have a lot more

Hi Karen,

According to family legend (which I've had no luck in verifying), our HORNEs came from Caithness originally, too. Until I find that link, I'm not sure what to do... I have found the HORN name in another Caithness branch in my tree, but I don't think they're related. Do you have any HORNEs in Caithness who married into the ROSIE family?
I did find the three boys (James, Robert, and Henry) on the 1851 census. They were living in Berwick-upon-Tweed, where James was a teacher (he married his wife there the next year and later returned to Edinburgh). The younger boys were only 12 and 10, so I'm guessing their parents probably died before that. I guess the next thing to do will be to try to find a death registration for David and Isabella from between 1841 and 1851... no easy task, I'm sure.

I haven't managed to go back that far yet. However, I've found a few clues that lead me to believe the father's side of the family was in Roxburghshire before they ended up in Edinburgh.
