Dear BG Members,
I am resurching the life of my Great Grandfather, Rev. William Whitehall Garrett.
He served on board a number of ships in the Royal Navy as a Naval Chaplain including the following HMS. Pylades 1855 - 1856 during the Baltic Campaign of the Crimean War, HMS. Euridice 1856 -1857, HMS. Furious 1857 - 1860/61 and HMS. Scout 1860 - 1864 during the Second China War, then on HMS. Valourous 1864 - 1867 and finally on HMS St. Vincent 1867 - 1870 a boys trainging ship moored in Portsmouth Harbour.

Whilst on board HMS Furious this ship was used by the 8th Lord Elgin (Plenipotentiary - a sort of Ambassador with full powers to act on behalf of the British Government), as his base.
This ship travelled further up the Yagtse Kiang River than any other British ship had done at the time, and also went to Japan.
During these events various artists and photographers recorded them including Colnel Crealock, Captain Dodwell RN., Signor Beato, Robert Morrison and Mr. Jocelyn.
I am seeking any photographic reproductions of paintings or photos in case they may show my Great Grandfather but also show what he may have seen at the time.
Any help would be gratefully appreaciated.
Many Thanks
Richard.

You might find some photos of ships on this web-site
http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/
but they are unlikely to include your chap

The National Maritime Museum
http://www.nmm.ac.uk/
has an excellent reprographic department. You can view descriptions of photos they hold using the search engine on their site. Look across to the left of the home page and select 'Picture Gallery'.
