I have 2 missing men in the 1851 + 1861 censuses. I am wondering if they were fighting abroad.

One is Frederick Sheridan b circa 1836 Sutton on Derwent/Pocklington, E Riding, Yorkshire. He married in 1856 and his wife is not on the 1851 either. The first child that I have found for them is on the 1871 census. He was born circa 1862 in Sutton. This seems a long time after the marriage. I wondered if Frederick was serving abroad and his wife was with him, so that they had older children by 1871 who no longer lived with them.

The second man is Joshua Hitchon (not a spelling mistake!)
He was born in, probably, Burnley Lancs circa 1817. I find him first in 1871 with his family. Though in 1861 I have found his wife, Margaret, and her children living in Newchurch, Lancs.

Hi Dolly,
Is Frederick on the 1871 census with a Mary Ann , Robert John, Ann Elizabeth, William and Richard in Sutton Derwent?
If it is there could be a possible one on 1861 in Sutton upon Derwent. It does look like Sherburn though
Frederick, Head, 25, Ag Lab, Pocklington
Mary Ann, wife, 23, Sutton Derwent
Frederick, son, 3, Storthwaite

May be him too in 1851 as a farm servant in Millington aged 14. Down as Fred Sherden, born Pocklington

Thank you so much Jo. It is the correct family

I am doing this as a 60th birthday present for a friend. We live in Gloucester and she has always wondered about her family, from Lancashire & Yorkshire. I didn't know what to give her for her birthday, she does not have a computer and we are not able to travel much so I said that I would find out as much as I could on the internet and buy her some key certificates. Then I will produce a tree that, maybe, she can enlarge on when she retires in a few years time. I am waiting for 1841 Yorkshire to come out and will treat her to the section covering this area.

Thanks again, another mystery solved

Joshua Hitchon was serving in India according to his late grandson. I have a large, very large, family tree showing his descendants. They are scattered all over the world with a lot in USA. He was born in Burnley in 1817 and died in 1903 in Rochdale. I do not know when or where his wife, to whom you refered, died. She was not in 1881 census.

Thank you John.

I will assume for the moment that Margaret was in India with him. Can you give me any more details?
Joshua was looking after his granchildren in 1901. Their mother, Hannah, who was Joshua's daughter had died in 1898 and her husband was ill in the workhouse.
My friend is the granddaughter of of one of these grandchildren, whose name was Fred Riles.

Joshua married Margaret Swanbank 25th May 1851 in Milnrow Church. She had a son, Christopher, born circa 1847, who was shown as Joshua's son on censuses. I have found 5 children for them including Christopher. Are you descended from John?

I am pretty certain that I have traced Joshua's antecedents back to his grandfather. My friend and I will be going to Lancashire in June to check these facts.

Would love to hear from you again, do you know which regiment Joshua served in?

John

Are you by any chance the John Hitchon who runs the Hitchon One-Name Study?

If not, Dolly may find the above link helpful. If you are, she won't find it helpful because she is already in contact! :)

Thanks Peter
I always forget the One Name studies. I have emailed the John Hitchon on there
