Is there a limit to the number of burials intered in one grave?
I have been trawling through a cd of burials in Brynmawr Municipal Cemetery trying to locate some ancestors and have found 9 burials between the years 1868 and 1912. The first 2 were adults and the next 7 were infants, great grandchildren of the first occupants

Cremations and infants don't take up much space. The size of plot permitted would presumably be a matter of local policy.

Thanks Geoffers
I'm fairly certain in this case they wouldn't be cremations. The children were aged between 9days and 3 years so all very small. There wouldn't have been much money to spare so this would have been a standard plot. My own parents are buried in the same cemetery and now we are informed that the limit is 2 burials to a plot.

|wave| Annie,
This is the largest of my lot! :D Both wives in with him ...... wonder if there was a fight as they were sisters! Unlawful second marriage in those days, besides which, the second wife left all the dosh to 'her' children and not to 'All' the children as per Frederick's Will! |shakehead

Simple answer no, there is no limit.
Having said that it depends on the plot and the specs. on purchase.
In York in the consecrated section the first public grave was dug 14 foot deep and when filled contained 8 bodies, but the average was 11 between 1837 and 1838. After 1838 they increased the number to 18 and in 1839 24 bodies in a grave.
Second Class graves for up to six bodies were launched in 1848.
The number of burials is really restricted by the depth of the first burial. The accepted norm. from 1908 was there should be 3 feet between the lid of the coffin and the surface of the ground but the 1847 Act required 30 inches. Some local areas have their own requirements.
Cheers
Guy
