I am trying to find out about my mother's family. Fanny Adam's b 1869 in Ware married George Wood in Wandsworth in 1890. Their children are Lily Wood Adams b 1888, clearly born before her parents were married. Rose Annie b1891, George William b.1892, Phyllis Amelia b. 1897, Daisy Mildred b1899, Gertrude May b.1905. On Gertrude's birth cert. it states that Fanny is a widow. Fanny then gave birth to Beatrice in 1907. I have Gertrude's and Beartice's birth cert. on both of them the fathers name is blank. I have them on the census, but cannot find anything about them after that. If anyone knows anything about them, or has any suggestion as to where I go from here I would be most grateful. Thank you.

Do you have George Wood's death certificate? What year was he born? I'd make that the next step - to confirm his date of death.

OK, I found it: George William Wood d: Sept qtr 1902, Hertford (vol 3a, pg 317), age 35 - so born abt 1867.

Next, in the 1901 census, the oldest child is listed as Nellie Doris Wood, age 6. You list 2 children born after the 1901 census - do you have them on the 1911 (you reference them as on the census)? If so, perhaps you can locate Nellie - is she in service somewhere? - you didn't list her as one of the children...
Then you could look in that general area to see if she ever married - it may have been within the next ten years. Then see if there are living people of that last name in that area in these days - perhaps they are descendents...

Hi Debbie, sorry I didn't make my self clear, the last 2, Gertrude and Beatrice are the ones I have birth certs. for. All the others I found on the 1910 census some with Fanny and George and some with their Adam Grandparents. As for George's death I assumed if Gertrude's birth cert. say Fanny is a widow that George is the father, but would you expect his name to be included followed by deceased? Fanny is not discribed as a widow on Beatrice's cert. George was born abt 1867 according to the census in 1901, is the 1911 census available? I didn't think it would be for 100 years.
best wishes Elizabeth.

Well, you should probably check to see if that death is for your George. If it is, he couldn't have been Gertrude's father in 1905. Did Fanny ever remarry?

Hi Debbie, How would I prove it's the right George? would I need to get his death cert and hope it has Fanny name as the informant? I found George on the 1891 census with his mother although he was married. His occupation is given as Bandsman 4th Bat.Bedfordshire Reg. Fanny at the time was with her parents with her 2 children one at 4 months old, so maybe George was home on leave and their wasn't room for him. Do you know if their is anywhere on line to look up army records? I haven't found anywhere that Fanny married again and I still haven't found anymore about her children other than their births.
Best wishes Betty

Yes, you should get the death certificate. Chances are reasonably good that (if it's him) one of the family signed the certificate to verify the death, and you seem to know most, if not all, the players...
Army records aren't something I know anything about - perhaps someone else on the forum can point you in the right direction... Good luck with your search.
