Hi John,
I am still trying to confirm my hunch that the man you are looking for is my great-grandfather. I have John Albert Adey's Attestation Papers. His father is listed as Albert Adey (which I found interesteing since I saw your post about James and Charlotte's children and Albert is listed. The birthplace listed on these papers in Faversham, Kent, England. It has listed that John Albert Adey's birthdate is March 16, 1899. Trying to confirm that my great-grandfather has this birthdate ... need to make a trip to the cemetary near Ottawa, Ontario.
The reason I believe this person may be my great-grandfather is that my grandfather John Harold Adey was born in Montreal, Quebec. Lachine is a suburb of Montreal. He too enlisted in military service. My father Harold Lee Adey, was born in Strathroy, Ontario on May 14, 1954 when my grandfather was stationed at CFB London. He has two older brothers Ronald and Robert and a younger brother named Brian. My grandfather John Harold Adey is an only child. My great-grandfather married a woman by the name of Hilda Wise. My mom tells me that they called my great-grandfather Jack ... but we are pretty sure it was a nickname for John.
If I get more information, I will let you know.
Thanks
Michelle

Hi John. You're correct, and if you visit the new online Canadian Genealogy Centre
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/index-e.html ,
you'll find a "Soldiers of the First World War database" which contains Attestation Papers, including John Albert Adey's. *You can also jump to the WW1 database directly by clicking:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/cef/index-e.html Then click "Search" in the left-hand column to begin.
n.b. John Albert's record contains two pages (front/back); if you use the above links you'll see both, but if you view his Attestation via the Ancestry website you'll see only the first.
Lachine was a good solid working-class district of Montreal and as such, it's included in the Lovell's Directories for the region which the Quebec Archives have put online, at:
http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html
On that website, for the years in question, you'll have to check the listings for Lachine under the "Places in the neighborhood of Montreal outside city limits" heading as well as under the regular "Alphabetical directory" directory which shows the inhabitants of greater Montreal. At a very quick glance, I couldn't see John Albert there, but there were a few other Avey's including Simon Avey, West Avey and E Avey.
Cheers and best of luck,
Ian (Ottawa, Canada)

John Albert Adey is listed as living in Montreal in 1929/1930. I believe this John Adey is my great-grandfather. My grandfather John Harold Adey was born in Montreal.
I have a photo of my great-grandather taken in Faversham as a young boy wearing an H.M.S Bat hat and uniform. Do not know the history of why he was dressed this way. I tried to upload the photo - but it wouldn't work.
Thanks

Thank you Ian those sites are very interesting.
Michelle, I have found details of 2 generations before John Albert Adey, would you like this information or do you already have it?
Regards

Hi John,
No, I don't have much information. My grandfather John Harold Adey was an only child and passed away when I was nine years old. I have been told he used to receive letters from an aunt living in England. I have yet to confirm this was a sister of his father's (John A. Adey). John A. Adey was married to Hila M. Wise. My grandfather was born in Montreal, Quebec. The family later moved to the Smiths Falls area in Ontario (outside Ottawa). Once the snow melts I am hoping to make a visit to the cemetery where my great-grandfather is buried to confirm his year of birth.
Thanks for all the help!
Michelle
P.S.
I think I mentioned in my earlier post that the photo I have of my great-grandfather as a young boy was taken in Faversham. I had problems trying to upload the photo so if you have an e-mail I can send it to you so you can see it. Lots of unanswered questions ... like why he came to Montreal, Canada.
