Hi Maud

I'm in Ontario, but don't know much about Canadian research as I was born in Yorkshire :), and my ancestors were from there, as well as Essex and Kent. I visit my local LDS FHC from time to time, not too often, but will help if I can. I hope you are the patient type! (unlike me - heehee!)

You could also try your own local LDS FHC if you have one - they should have access to the same films.

Where specifically in Ontario are you looking?

Hi Maud,

I am from Canada. I haven't yet been to any LDS centres. Most of my research up to this point has been done online. That said, there are some good resources available on the Internet. At the moment, volunteers are transcribing the 1901 Canadian census. It's almost 85% transcribed now, so you might want to have a look and see if any of your Ontario relatives are there.

There are quite a few other Ontario resources that are available online. Do you know what area/county you are looking at?

Hi Linda & Sarah
Thank you for your replies re my query.

I did manage to access the 1901 census, and was fortunate enough to obtain info re my gt aunt & her family, they were then living in Deseronto, Ontario. I also was able to find out that my gt aunt had twin sons born in 1903 (Jerome & Jerrald Gartland) this was about two years ago, but since then I have come to a full stop at the usual brick wall.

I have inserted messages on the various boards for Canada, but so far with no results. I did find someone who had details of my gt aunt`s husband, but only for that of his first marriage, he was a widower when he married Grace Gagan (her surname had been changed when sent to Canada in 1885, from Geoghan to Gagan) she married Augustus Gartland in 1894 , but the person doing the research on the Gartland family, knew nothing about her or her children!! so as mentioned, I have come to a full stop.

I was also trying to find what happened to the other gt aunt, Laura Gagan, she had been a domestic servant, with the Hayes family, and according to the 1891 census, she was still with Mrs Catherine Hayes (then a widow) as domestic servant, Laura would have been abt age 15 to 16 , so I assume that because I could not find her on the 1901 census, she most likely married, but obviously, without knowing who she married, I cannot go any further.

I know there were still relatives in Canada, my grandparents married there and my mother was born in Hastings County, Ontario in 1896, they left Canada in 1900 and went to Scotland. My mother corresponded with these relatives until after WW2, but the she ceased to do so, probably because my my brother and myself were then asking questions (we never knew anything about our grand[arents circumstances or why they had been in Canada, I did not know until a few years ago, when I started to research my own family, that my maternal g.father had actually been born in Stafford England, my g.mother in Derby

My g.father & his sisters were sent to Canada from a workhouse , and my g.mother had been sent from a childrens home, so all this had been kept secret, not only that, as far as the religious side was concerned, my g.father & his family had been Roman Catholic, but we never knew this, for some reason he had a hatred for the RC`s (since doing research I have found out that many boys were badly treated and can understand the reason for his feelings) so I expect that my mother did not want to reveal family skeletons etc, and therefore she just ceased correspondence!! I never knew the relatives surnames , when as a young girl I was writing to a cousin Eleanor,in Canada, my letter would be included with my mothers, and she married, I cannot go any further.

I did hear some surnames when eavesdropping on my mother`s conversations with other people, but again, attached no significance to them, it was only when I started researching that I recalled various snippets of these conversations and what the names meant (most likely at the time of eavesdropping, I was hoping to hear what was then important info to me, such as where babies came from etc etc!! so when I would hear various items, would just lose interest, wish now I Had taken more heed)

Anyway, my main question for the present is to know if anyone in Ontario, could perhaps let me know if there are any local newspapers that I could write to in the hope that an enquiry could be published? to see if anyone there would recognise the various family names and hopefully contact me?

I would love to hearwhat you could advise on that question. and will look forward to any reply

Hi Maud

That is a lot of information to absorb. I'm not sure exactly what information you want to find.

It would help if you were more specific with your requests, such as asking for a lookup for the marriage of Laura Gagan, if that's what you want - was she in Ontario in 1891 or in England?

I had never heard of Deseronto, but do a search using www.google.ca (http://www.google.ca/) and you will find sites for the town, cemetery, library archives which mentions old newspapers, etc. Also search for Hastings County.
I tried putting some of the website links here but they got a bit messed up :o

You might also want to insert an ad. in the Kingston Whig Standard if you want to find living relatives

Hope this helps

Hi Linda, thank you for your reply, sorry if I did not make my query a bit clearer, my brain sometimes doesn`t co-ordinate with my fingers!!

Yes I would love to find out if Laura Gagan married, she was in the Ontario 1891 census (she had been sent with her brother & sisters to Canada in 1885)

I was very fortunate in obtaining the info about Grace Gagan marrying etc, a few years ago my son had been communicating with a gentleman in Canada, he was finding info for him in our Essex records office re the Jarvis family, my son had remarked that his grandmother (my mother) had been born in Canada and so when this gentleman next wrote to us (did not have the computer then) he asked if I would like him to find out details, he was then living near the records office in I think Toronto, unfortunately he moved away from the area after then, and as we had no further info on either side re the Jarvis family, we lost touch after that.

Laura Gagan was in domestic service with the Hayes at Maryesville, Ontario and Grace was living with her family (in 1901) at Deseronto Town, perhaps that may have been near Belleville? that is where my grandparents married? the info on their marriage details were for Lennox & Addington County, Napana Ontario. I have found out that these places were apparently near an Indian reservation?

Hi Maud

I believe I have access to marriages in Ontario from about 1865 up to the very early 1900's at my local LDS. I cannot say when I will be going there next, hopefully within the next month or two, but have made a note of your info and will look it up.

Maud

You may want to give me your email address. By the time I do the lookup, you or I may be lost amongst thousands of members!:D

Hi Linda,
Thank you for your offer of help, if you should find anything I would be "over the moon"!!

I live in Essex.

Laura Gagan, was b. Dec 1876 in Stafford England her parents were Louisa Paddison & Stephen Geoghan

As Laura was still very young when sent to Canada, I wonder if she remembered her parents names, there were errors on my g.father`s marriage document, he had given his mother as Louisa Pattison (instead of Paddison) and named himself "John" Stephen Gagan, he actually used the name John on some of his childrens b,certs, I suppose until he obtained his own b,cert, and found the correct details, I don`t know if the children maintained contact when they were in Canada , or what they had remembered about their life in England

Thank you again for your offer, I will look forward to anything you may discover.

HI Maud,

Another newspaper you might want to consider is the Napanee Beaver, a weekly newspaper. Napanee is about 10 km. east of Deseronto. Deseronto is on the edge of the Tyendinaga Indian Reserve but the township is also called Tyendinaga and is in Lennox and Addington County. Belleville is about 25 km. west of Deseronto in Hasting County. Other towns to consider would be Marysville and Shannonville. There are still a number of Gartlands in the area.
