Really thrilled by this and will be following up on it. Thank you all.
His mother had remarried by the time Mulliss Amos emigrated to New Zealand, and she came out here with him. We had no idea about the siblings. I wonder what became of them? More research to do.
Is James Ashenden in any earlier census?
Many thanks

Dale,
The following from the 1851 census may relate to your ASHENDEN family - the handwriting is hard to read so I have added ?? wherever I'm not sure of my interpretation.
Note that this entry presents the strongt possibility that Hannah's maiden name was MULLISS and that Hannah and James ASHENDEN worked in the same household before they married.

New ZealandYou're welcome, Dale. Offhand, I don't see any of the family in later censuses...
Do you know when Hannah remarried or when she left for New Zealand? What was Hannah's new married name?

That's fantastic!
So James was the only male in a household of females with three Anns and two Hannahs, and took his pick of them by the look of it.
Mulliss Amos and Hannah emigrated to New Zealand c. 1879/80, according to his death certificate. I believe they landed in Port Chalmers, ie Dunedin, and settled in Invercargill. We have them pretty well sussed since 1880.
I am on the trail of Hannah's new married name but do not know it at present. I'll be in touch again when I do. Mulliss (my great-grandfather) was our family mystery man. He was an accountant and a somewhat uncommunicative one.
The tinyurl for James would not work - I'll try it again later.
Thanks again for your efforts, Peter, Trish, idredge.

"The tinyurl for James would not work - I'll try it again later."
I've double checked. It worked for me on the second or third attempt!
You might want the image for your records.

Yesterday I got a 404, but it worked today. And it's brilliant! Many thanks.
Now I wioll have to find Stephen and Mary Ashenden's marriage and birth dates. Is this a case of parish registers as well?

Dale,
The following two death records may be for your Stephen and Mary ASHENDEN:
1. Stephen ASHENDEN, 87 years old, in the December quarter of 1870 in Dartford, Kent. Reference: Volume 2a, Page 221.
2. Mary ASHENDEN, 78 years old, in the June quarter of 1870 in Dartford, Kent. Reference: Volume 2a, Page 225.
Trish
Dale,
The following Stephen and Mary ASHENDEN would appear to match the death records I just gave you:
1851 census: HO107/1607 Folio 415 Page 46
?Line? Near Mill, Dartford, Kent
Stephen ASHENDEN Head Mar 66 Laborer ?Powder? Mills [born] Kent Wrotham
Mary Do Wife Mar 58 " Darenth
Ann Do Daur U 21 " Stone
Harriett Do Do U 18 " Do
Stephen Do Son 4 " Crayford
Stephen Jr. would seem too young to be Mary and Stephen Sr.'s son so perhaps he is a grandchild...
Trish
The following look like the same Stephen and Mary ASHENDEN in 1861:
1861 census: RG9/467 Folio 123 Page 47
West Street, Dartford, Kent
Stephen ASHENDENN [sic] Head Mar 78 Laborer [born] Wrotham Kent
Mary ASHENNDENN [sic] Wife Mar 71 Darenth Do
Carrie HARMAN Lodger Mar 28 Field Worker Stone Do
Harry HARMAN Do 5 Dartford Do
In 1861, Stephen Jr., now 14, appears to be living with his parents, Edward and Maria ASHENDEN, 1 sister and 4 brothers [two of whom are named Henry, and William, both 10 years old] at Swan Row No. 8 in Crayford, Kent. "Edward is a Watchman at Print Works" and Stephen is a "Cow Boy". Reference: RG9/466 Folio 137 Page 33.
Going back to 1851, Edward and Maria ASHENDEN are at 6 Swan Row with the rest of the family [no Stephen, of course -- he's with Stephen and Mary], including Henry and William who are listed as 3 months old so they are definitely twins. Edward is 33 and an "Ostler". Also with the family is a cousin, Jane Wells, 23, unmarried, born in Stone, Kent. I can't make out her occupation. Reference: HO107/1607 Folio 251 Page 14.
I think it's quite likely that Edward ASHENDEN is a son of Stephen and Mary ASHENDEN -- and maybe a brother of your James ASHENDEN.
Trish
Dale,
I find it curious that Hannah, Mulliss, George and Emily ASHENDEN aren't showing up on the 1871 census. If we have the right death record for James -- showing his death as taking place in 1868 -- then Hannah is a widow and possibly remarried by then.
So, since I couldn't find the family under the ASHENDEN name, I looked through the 1861 census for a Hannah born about 1832, Oxhill. I found just one, a Hannah BLAKEMAN, 40, married to Alfred BLAKEMAN, 31, an "Ag. Lab", living in Oxhill. No children. Living next door to them are a Job and Elizabeth BLAKEMAN, 71 and 68, respectively. And next door to them is Henry BLAKEMAN, 38. Reference: RG10/3217 Folio 77 Page 11.
What's interesting is that just down the road is a Mary MULLIS, 69, a widow and, next door, a William and Elizabeth MULLIS, 44 and 41, and 6 children. And further down the road, more MULLISes: William and Elizabeth MULLIS, 74 and 76, and, next door, Daniel and ELiza MULLIS, 26 and 21. All the men are agricultural labourers.
I then went back to 1851 to look up Alfred BLAKEMAN. He's 21, unmarried and living with his parents, Job and Elizabeth. Right next door are Thomas and Mary MULLITT [sic], 77 and 80. Thomas is listed as a "Pauper Formerly Ag Lab". Reference: HO107/2076 Folio 668 Page 18.
But this Hannah BLAKEMAN shows up again in 1881 and 1891 with Alfred in Oxhill -- so this can't be your Hannah who left England in 1879/80...

I'm afraid it is ;)
You're unlikely to find birth dates and will have to make do with baptism details. Very occasionally you may find birth dates recorded in the baptism register but that's pretty much the exception.

Hi I have found a Stephen Ashenden 1851 which might fit.
Stephen Ashenden 66 born Wrotham
Mary 58 born Darenth
Ann 21 daughter born Stone
Harriet 18 daughter born Stone
Stephen 4 Son born Crayford, very unlikely he is a son but possible could be one of the daughters!!
Living in Dartford.

For the marriage, the likeliest place to try would be Darenth - where the wife was born.
If no luck there, in view of the Stone connection, it might be worth trying Stone or Swanscombe (the neighbouring parish). It might be that the family had moved to Stone/Swanscombe looking for work. The cement industry & chalk quarrying was a major employer in the area.

If nobody has mentioned it, those three parish registers are online at http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/
Look for "Parish Registers Online" and take it from there.

Little Stephen was probably just staying with his grandparents for a short time -- while his mother cared for 3 month old twin boys!
