A site which might be of use to anyone tracking down ancestors who went to South Africa is Heather's South African Genealogy Help List. It can be found on www.genealogy.co.za and has various sections, including passenger lists, missionaries, surname interests, look-ups, etc., and is fully searchable.

Best wishes

Ann

Heather's site is now by subscription except for those already registered with MWeb, with limited access to some free information. A totally free site for South Africa can be found at
http://www.genealogyworld.net/

For those descended from the 1820 settlers try http://www.1820settlers.com/

I did a transcription of the log and the muster roll of HMS Weymouth, the ship my 1820 settler ancestors emigrated on. It is on line on the Ships List at
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/weymouth.htm
Probably fairly typical of an emigrant ship at this time

Am I the only one who can only see a huge empty space after Rosmary's name or is there something there that this stupid puter won't look at?

No, you can't blame your puter entirely for this one Ann. :D
Rosemary definitely had a bit of finger trouble. She signed off, then put her name again - but with the gap inbetween.
(Rosemary, I know that that was your first post but you can edit, i.e. correct, the error. Click on your message and in the bottom right-hand corner you should see an 'edit' box. Click on it and you should then be able to get rid of that big empty space. You have to give a reason why you want to edit, but considering that I once had to give my reason as 'I wrote a load of rubbish' when I wanted to actually delete a message, you won't get thrown off the forum!)

I have transcribed a two page proclamation re the sub-division of settler lands from the Grahamstown Journal of 1845, listing land transactions of many of the settler plots since 1820. Far too long to post here, but it can be viewed at
http://www.1820settlers.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=48

Sue,

Thank you for the work you have done on transcribing the Grahamstown Journal - I looked at it today for the first time and found my Stamboom of my South Africa line mentioned (baptism of his daughter in 1837) |woohoo| . Well done and I eagerly look forwartd to more! :)

Have just posted passenger lists from the Grahamstown Journal covering 1844-45 with a posting on how to find 1837-1843 on the South African rootsweb list. They can be seen in the Archives at

Does anyone have any information on a ship from 1824 to Natal. I am looking to trace back a Dering Lee Warner Stainbank and his brother Henry Ellerton Stainbank. I have found a list from the SA website, posted on the first page already. But I am trying to trace further back from this point backwards, so I was looking for any more detail I can find.

We believe one ofhte brothers was travelling with his wife and child.
