Looking for help, ancestors and descendants of the following:
John Nicholson (occupation Stonemason) who had 1 known child Ann (Born C1823/1924 Devonport). She married twice.
First husband was William McConnell, they married 1841 Stoke Damerel and had 1 known child Elizabeth Jane (born 1844). William died in Plymouth/Devonport 1847 and was a mariner. His father was George McConnell (occupation Smith)
She married her second husband Matthew Matthews in 1848 at East Stonehouse and they had 3 known children, Ann (born 1854 Devonport), John (born C1859 Branscombe) and Matthew George (born C1861 Maryport, Cumberland).

Do you have the following?

1851 Census

Address: 39 Cornwall Street, Devonport, Devon
Reference: HO107/1882 Folio 13 Page 21

Matthew MATTHEWS Head M 25 Seaman [born] Gloucestershire, Gloucester
Ann do Wife M 27 Devon, Devonport

If this is the right family, where's Elizabeth Jane? Could she be with her grandparents?

Alison,

Oh, I see both birth and death records for an Elizabeth Jane McCONNELL in Stoke Damerel so, sadly, it appears that she died in the March quarter of 1845 at only a few months of age. If this is the case, poor Ann lost her baby daughter and her husband within 2 years of each other.

But you probably already know this...

At the moment I don't think your John Nicholson connects, he was probably a bit younger than mine. Will bear it in mind though as I have wondered if there was a family reason that Matthew and his family took a coastguard posting so far from the west of england.
