Did you know that the Verrall family owned a brewery in Southover, Lewes? I found this out because, for a time, my great grandfather was landlord of The Dolphin Inn, Lewes which had been owned by Verralls and I came across the deeds online.
By the time my great grandfather was running The Dolphin Verralls had sold the brewery but you will find quite a bit about their business interests within the deeds.

Whatever your name interest it always pays to check out the Guild of One Name Studies web site (just put GOONS in Google).
Your Boniface name is one that is a one-name study.
Good luck.

Chris, that is just so kind of you. I think I have come to a bit of a full stop on the Cheal front. They have branched into the Verralls and Bonifaces but I cant seem to find any more of them prior to George Cheale and Ann Rawlly both born circa 1730.
Im even having bother trying to find my GGF's death in Rotherhithe, trawled 1837 online and family relatives but no sign as yet. I reckon it would be 1930'ish but I wonder if it has been mistranscribed.
Anyway, I am trying to put together a website, it looks a bit like a kids school project, but coming along, if youd like to cast your expert eye!
Really kind of you to think of me.

Sorry, guys, only just noticed your replies. I must try to keep a watch on all the various sites, but it does get a bit confusing!
No, I didnt know about the Verralls having a brewery - I shall def look that up, many thanks.
Steve, yes thanks, I am a member of the Boniface group now which has been a big help tracing them back to 1550. By the way, I have a strong line of Steers too! I belong to the Steer/s group aswell!
Many thanks both for your kind interest.

Hi heather
I am at the moment busy transcribing / photographing the monuments in St John the Baptist, Southover, Lewes.
Some work has to be carried out on the tower (been leaking since the 1700's) and they need to move some of the memorial stones - so am doing a bit of 'Rescue Archaeology'
I have noticed that there are a lot of large tombs associated with both the Verrall and Cheale names - the earliest I have found up to now dates from 1762 although I notice from the Burial Register (1671 - 1995) that the name Verrall first appears in 1673 - Elizabeth, dau of John & Elizabeth Verrall.
If you have connected with the Verrall, Cheale and Bonniface surnames in Southover, will glady provide you with details as work progresses

Alfred Verrall, aged 24, was a shoeing smith (I think that means a farrier or horse shoer) with the 6th Dragoon Guards in Preston Barracks Brighton. He married Charlotte Doe, aged 21, at St John's Parish Church, Carlton Hill, Brighton on 11 February 1894. Alfred's father is described as a "brewer" on the marriage certificate (which i can send you a copy of if you wish). Is he one of yours?

just noticed this website and registered. My grandmother is very much into her family history of the name 'Verrall'. Our side emanate from East Kent (Medway) but originally from Sussex (no suprises there!). I am quite interested in the Verrall family name and in particular our military history and experiences. Unfortuanltely my grandmother who has all the knowledge is paper-based and not hooked up to internet. Happy to discuss anything about 'Verrall'...I'd like to trace back further to sussex to assist my grandmother and get all the knowledge and info she has on electronic databases and links etc. Any advice guys and gals? Neil.

Am getting quite into this! If anyone else is researching the 'Verrall' family name then I'd be happy to discuss anything. A quick question - does anyone know if there is a Verrall family crest or coat of arms (a bit cheesey I know, sorry).

I am also researching Verralls in Sussex, but my interest lies specifically in the descendants of William Verrall of Telscombe (1808-1872) who was a farm bailiff at Swanborough Farm, Iford and who had four children by his first marriage to Elizabeth Ann Snashall (1802-1836): William, John and Mary Ann.
He later married Caroline Funnell in 1844, and had four children: Jacob, Esther Lucy, Lydia and Ruth Caroline.
Have you come across this family? If so, would be happy to share information.

Hi
I've just discovered a Cheale in my tree. Sophia Cheale b.c. 1786 somewhere in Sussex. She is my 4x Gt Grandmother and married Samuel Robinson 17 Nov 1807 St Thomas, Lewes. They had 3 (known) sons: Benjamin, Hezekiah and John.
Does this help?
