I am researching the Herbert family from the Stroud area.
According to the 1881 census (on Family Search.org) John Herbert was born in Arlington in 1843.
Is there a village / hamlet / district in Gloucestershire by that name?
Also, his occupation is given as Miller (C).
What does the (C) denote?
Thanking you in anticipation

According to that font of knowledge Gazetteer of Great Britain & Ireland (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_656.html#item_13157) - Cassell 1898(Reference #0168)
Arlington is a hamlet in the parish of Bilbury 4 miles north-west of Fairford, Gloucestershire. That means it is just east of Cirencester
Cheers

The (C) probably stands for Corn. The old water mill in Arlington still stands and is interesting to wander around. Arlington stands on the SW bank of the River Coln, on the opposite bank is Bibury. It's a very pretty place and in summer is packed with tourists. There is a famous line of weavers' cottages called Arlington Row.

If you use a search engine such as www.google.co.uk (http://www.google.co.uk) and enter either 'Bibury' or 'Arlington Row' you'll find a website with some photos.

An on online map such as http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ or http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/ will help you to locate the village
