Does anyone know where I could find details of a coroner's inquest from 1838? My ancestor died and was buried in Bromborough, Cheshire and i just don't know where to start!!
Many Thanks
Sam

The best place is the local newspaper for the area at the time of the death. Coroner's kept their own records and after they retired or died it was up to them what happened to the paperwork. Every inquest was reported in the local newspaper because it was the public place for official notices.
If you can find out which paper covers the area then you can see if the British Library, Newspaper Library at Colindale has it.

I've just checked with Birkenhead Library & they have the Liverpool Mercury for 1811 - 1852. The local Birkenhead newspapers don't start until 1860. The Mercury may well have covered Bromborough. If you do not have access to the newspaper, let me know the date of death & I will look next time I go to the library.

Hello Wirral,
Thanks for the offer of looking up the inquest for me. The name of my ancestor is Hannah Whitby (nee Waring) and she died in the dec quarter of 1838. I have just ordered the death cert so I can give you an exact date in a week or so, when it arrives.
Many Thanks
Sam
