Ann, the daughter of Samuel and Martha Clough, was born at Chorlton and christened at St Oswalds Church, Backford, on 9 Setember 1825.
Other than the following, I do not know anything about her:
CHRISTENING RECORDS: show that she was christened at St Oswald Parish Church, Backford.
And, on her daughter's, Elizabeth, christening record it states that Ann was a
'Single Woman'.
I know that there are a couple of Ann's who were born around the same time from Chorlton/Backford who married and lived in Chester. Any guidance on what happened to Ann would be of great help.
Thanks,
Ivor

IvorIvor,
I have a couple of questions -- the answers to which may help someone help you:
-- Do you know when and where daughter Elizabeth was born?
-- Do you know what happened to Elizabeth?
-- Was Elizabeth's surname CLOUGH?
-- Do you have Elizabeth or Samuel and Martha CLOUGH on any of the census records?

Trish,
1) CHRISTENING RECORDS For St Oswalds Church, Backford: States that Elizabeth's mother was Ann, 'A Single Woman' and her father was not known.
1851 CENSUS (taken 30 March 1851): states that Betsey (Elizabeth) was 8 years old, a scholar and the Grandchild of Samuel and Martha Clough, Not Their Child, and being born in Backford Cheshire.
1881 CENSUS: shows Elizabeth as being a housewife, aged 38 years old and being born in Backford, Cheshire.
MARRIAGE RECORDS: state that Samuel was the father (or had taken the father's place) when Elizabeth married Martin Cole.
2) Elizabeth is my GG grandmother. She married Martin Cole on 16 January 1864 at Broughton In Furness
3) Elizabeth had the surname of 'Clough' given that her father was not known according to her christening record (see point 1 above, christening and marriage records)
4) The 1851 Census states that Martha Clough was aged 57 years old, married and being born at Upton, Cheshire. Whilst it states that Ann's father, Samuel, was aged 49 years old, married, born in Backford (the 1871 census also states he was born at Backford but the 1861 states he was born at Nantwich), Cheshire and employed as an aggricultural labourer.
I hope that is of help.
Thanks,
Ivor

There is nothing to indicate whether John Taskor is related to the Cloughs. He is the only one born at Upton in that census.

From the IGI (no source given), marriage of Samuel Cluff & Martha Tasker 10 May 1822 St Oswald, Chester. Also death of Samuel Cluff 11 Feb 1875.

Wirral,
Thanks for those messages. I cannot understand where I got it wrong about the 1851 census stating Martha was born at Upton, I could have sworn that is what it had said, but thanks for putting me right, I'll change my records.
As for Samuel Cluff's death date being11 Feb 1875, my Samuel Clough died on that date and is burried at St Oswald's Church, Backford, and his death date is given on the grave staone along with that of his wife, Martha, and some of their sons. I will have to get the church (St Oswald's, Backford) copies regarding the wedding date and Martha's maiden name just to confirm your findings on the IGI.
Again, many thanks. You have given me the direction in which to look.
