Forum: General Family History Queries

Although it is best to use specific forums for various topics, this one is for general topics that don't otherwise have a home.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Important message for all forum members

People who research family history are very generous with their time and help, especially towards those new to research. This is great because it shows what a friendly bunch we all are. However, there are certain things which are not allowed and this includes breaching copyright or licence - At...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: General Family History

Hello folks. This is just a reminder that this forum exists. As well as general questions on family and local history; it's as good a board to use as any if you've 'lost' someone, somewhere and want to begin tracking them. I'm sure that you know the sort of thing I mean, an ancestor was...

  1. Name Change

I can track my grandfather, Edward Hope, back to the 1891 census, from there however he seems to disappear. There is a possibility that he might have been born with the surname Owen, and there is an Edward Owen that I can find listed as been born in Gateshead in 1872, which seems to be about right....

  2. Early Census info

Is any original documentation kept on record of original entries on early census, pre 1841, or is it just statistical data obtained that has been kept? Thank you

  5. researching lloyds of london underwriters

Does anyone know if it's possible to find out more about those who were Lloyds' underwriters in the 1800s? I've just discovered a great-great aunt of mine who seems to have spent 30+ years in the service of the same family in Camden. They begin as doctors but her final master is listed as a...

I am trying to find who was living in the house where my mother was born, when she was born. 13. Were Centenarians reported in newspaper?

Rather than tag on to an old thread, I thought it may be better to start a new one. My 4x great grandmother Mary Ann Curnick nee Simpson died 9th April 1876 and her age was given as 100 (death registered by daughter). Her burial entry on 15th April 1876 at St. Mary Battersea also gives her ages...

  16. 1911 Census and handwriting of ancestors

My wife thinks I'm 'nuts' and many of you may think the same as she!!! From what I've been given to understand, the 'head of house' completed the census in his/her own hand, If this be true, the 'boy wonder' has another collection coming up - all the ancestors as heads in 1911 - with...
