Pam's Prattle - 23rd. August
Written by Pam Drake

I have added three more Huddersfield parish register CDs to the Hudderfield and District FHS stand at Parish Chest, a new CD of Monumental Inscriptions (A-I) to the Cambridgeshire FHS stand, a stack of MI CDs to the Scottish Monumental Inscriptions stand and last, but not least, a new book, 'Ventonleague, Hayle - Some History and Life of a Cornish Village' from a new supplier to Parish Chest, P.A. Rutter.

We have two events left this year that we are due to attend with the Parish Chest and British Genealogy displays; the first is the Bristol and Avon FHS Open Day on the 18th. September, at Thornbury Leisure Centre, South Gloucestershire, and the second, the Glamorgan FHS Open Day at Llantrisant Leisure Centre, Southgate Park, Llantrisant.  As Frank is still having lots of problems with his eyesight and also another eye operation lined up for 28th. September, our attendance is totally dependent on what the doctor says when Frank visits her next week.  Fingers crossed!

It was my daughter, Clare's birthday on the 17th. August, and as a special treat, Frank and I took Clare to the Royal Oak in Perranwell for a celebratory meal.  Excellent, freshly cooked food and cheerful, friendly service - rather different and so much better than the Norway Inn in Perranarworthal!

Last Saturday morning, Frank and I went to Hewaswater, near St. Austell, to have a look at a poultry auction.  Truly, I had only gone along to be nosey and really had no intention of buying anything, but amongst lots of other birds, there were six point of lay, blue Maran pullets, and although I usually only buy my chickens from Cornish Poultry,  these birds were so beautiful, I just couldn't resist bidding on them!  I got them at a bargain price, too!

Sunday turned out to be a very miserable day weather-wise, (today isn't much better, either!) but before the rain really set in, I was able to wander around the fields, collect some mushrooms and a huge bowl of blackberries.  In between baking, most of Sunday afternoon was spent making jam and bottling fruit.  Great fun!

During my walk around the fields, I noticed lots of sloes, crab apples and rosehips, so before too long  I need to get out to the fields again and pick some of those. I just love free food, don't you?

Right!  It looks as if the sky is clearing and the rain should stop at any moment, so I am off to put a couple of new perches in the turkey house and then clean out my chickens.
